CHIATURA – THE SADDEST RAINBOW IN THE WORLD

Chiatura represents the largest manganese reserve in Georgia and one of the largest in the world. For more than 100 years, the mines have been active, bringing industry and jobs to the area. However, the effects, which can be seen everywhere, are not all positive. The black element can be found staining the rocks and the soil in the region and the skin of the people working in the mines. But the problem is not purely aesthetic. According to the National Environmental Agency of Georgia, the amount of manganese in the River Kvirila significantly exceeds the allowed margin. Manganese dust in the air poses a great health risk for the people in the region as exposure to excessive manganese levels can lead to a variety of psychiatric and motor disturbances.
