MY KINGDOM FOR A HORSE: THE STORY OF APPLEBY FAIR

Each year, thousands of Travellers and Gypsies come to the little town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in the north of England to buy and sell horses, to meet up with their friends and families, to meet potential partners and to celebrate their culture. The Appleby Horse Fair is an annual highlight for many of them and besides the horses and all things horse related one can find fortune tellers, missionaries, babies in shiny prams, people selling painted milk churns and stalls that sell heated rollers, big bows and frilly socks.

But besides all this, it is a wonderful time for the many children coming together there. For this one week, is a place where children are free to play outside, to hang out with their friends, stay up late and experience adventures. They seem to live in a parallel world surrounded by farmland and animals and this one week seems like a wonderful eternity.
